More than once I have broken some feature by adding a new feature or solving a seemingly unrelated bug, and I found out the problem by navigating to earlier versions and comparing when the broken feature worked and finding exactly which changeset broke it. Version control is just all around extremely useful and I think that every serious programmer should keep even personal projects under version control.

The biggest problem I have is finding a SVN server or similar to host a repository. I have never used Microsoft's version control solution, or proforce, I'm only familar with SVN and CVS. However, SVN has generally served me well except for some minor issues, and I'm a big fan of tortoise SVN.

A great website though I use for managing my projects is Assembla. They offer free (!!) SVN hosting up to 500 mb, plus a wiki, plus trac, etc. etc. All in all, I have been extremely happy with their service and will probably upgrade to their commercial package (which is extremely affordable, at only $19/month) - which gives you 5 GB of space. Definitely, if you are looking for a place to host a versioned project, i would highly recommend Assembla.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-04-03T17:50:06Z</dcterms:modified>
